Beyond Religion: Knowing God Intimately

One of the most moving prayers in God's Word is found in the letter to the Ephesians. The apostle prays that God, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, would grant them wisdom and revelation through His Spirit to better know Him. The Christian life is summed up in this: knowing God.

Jesus came to save us so that we might know God. We must put God at the center, because it is by knowing Him that we solve our problems, emerge from depression, and live our lives to the fullest on earth. Your relationship with God is not a monetary one; no one can take it away from you. Men can do all sorts of things to you, but they cannot take that away from you, nor can they persuade God against you. I assure you, the only ally you have on earth is Jesus.

The psalmist said, “My father and my mother will forsake me, but the Lord will take me up.” People don’t seek God because they place their trust in other things like their beauty, their money, their relationships, or even in themselves, which is a mistake. They don’t even realize how vulnerable they are without God. I’m not referring to human cruelty, but to the need to understand that the only person each individual truly needs is God. Claiming to be a Christian while having a limited and fragmentary knowledge of God is a mistake. But the wonderful thing is that God has given us access.

The apostle Paul, who was once opposed to the Lord, understood what was truly important. In his letter to the church at Ephesus, he simply prayed that they would know God. He prayed that the Holy Spirit would enlighten the eyes of their hearts. If you only pray one prayer, pray that you would know God properly.

I always declare to the Lord, “I desire to know You as much as a human being can know You. I want to explore all the possibilities of relationships You have offered to humans.” We were made for Him. The meaning of human existence is God Himself. God did not create us for cars, a career, or an education; He made us for Himself. Anyone who lives for anything else has wasted their existence. We are just passing through this earth.

My prayer is that everyday things will lose their hold on you. We often tend to lock ourselves into a mentality that attributes undue importance to certain things, when in reality, they have no value. A life lived outside of intimacy with God is a wasted life, for it is lived contrary to the reason for which it was created. We are made for God. God's Word shows that before the fall, God had a close relationship with humanity. The coming of Jesus restored this precious relationship. Indeed, Jesus did not come simply to forgive sins, but to reestablish the relationship of intimacy with God. Someone had to bear our sins so that we could enter into a harmonious relationship with God. Forgiveness is essential to reconciliation, because God's justice and holiness prevent fellowship with sinners. This is the very essence of the gospel.

I always declare to the Lord: “I desire to know You as much as a human being can know You. Share on X

It is not a matter of seeking forgiveness solely for the sake of being forgiven, nor of wanting to be justified simply for the principle of justification. No, the end of all things is God Himself. He is the beginning and the end. The goal of human beings is God; their destination is God. Freeing oneself from the mental manipulations and negative influences of childhood, family, and society is essential to recognizing what is truly valuable. When you begin to be close to God, you become aware of the futility of everything that constitutes human existence. The Word of God reveals to us that heaven and earth will pass away. Imagine it, beyond yesterday's mere clothes. Sometimes even friendships do not stand the test of time, but the Word of the Lord endures for eternity.

Everyone must choose to build their life on solid foundations and allow God to open their eyes to the vanity of what seems so essential. Sometimes you say to people, “Why weren’t you at prayer?” and they reply that they had to go see their cousin. “Oh my God, is your cousin in an emergency? No, I just wanted to see her!” Those things that seem essential will pass. Heaven will pass, everything that seems permanent will pass, but the Word of the Lord remains.

This God deserves to be known, for He is the only one who will endure when all else has disappeared. When you stand before Him, what judgment will you pass on your life? And God, what will He say? “They had the opportunity to know Me, but they preferred to know Philip and Joanna.”

My goal is to know Him, said the apostle Paul. For years, I have been saying: “My goal is to know Him.” Hours of intense prayer, with the only request: “Let me know You.” God’s presence is manifest in our meetings, especially when the leaders are sensitive to it, but this is only a beginning. This gives you a glimpse. The rest, you will do it yourselves, in the secret place. If we want to know God, we must be regulars in the secret place.
