MEDITATION
You may have already had this experience.
You're sharing the Gospel with someone intelligent, educated, and thoughtful, and with each response, you're astonished by their inability to grasp what seems so obvious to you. You explain again. You rephrase. You clarify. Nothing works. Their reasoning consistently misses the point. You end up thinking they're being disingenuous. Yet, looking at them, you perceive something else: a blank stare, a real, almost total incomprehension.
Paul was well aware of this situation. And in his second letter to the Corinthians, he explains it. He reveals another, often overlooked, dimension of the human condition without Christ—a dimension that deserves serious consideration.
The context is important. Paul has just spoken of the glory of the ministry of the new covenant, a glory that surpasses that of the old, a light that transforms from glory to glory. A question then naturally arises: if this light is so brilliant, why do some not see it?
Paul begins by explaining that the message of the Gospel is clear. Moreover, he proclaims it with integrity, without cunning or manipulation. However, it remains hidden from some. The problem, therefore, lies neither in the message nor in the messenger. The problem lies with the recipient, whose capacity for understanding has been impaired.

Who is "the god of this world"?
Paul calls Satan «the god of this world,» not because he is divine, but because he is treated as such. He is obeyed, followed, and served. By whom? By «this world,» this current system, this present order in rebellion against God. Humanity without God is governed by Satan, and Satan is able to act freely against it. And humanity serves it, often unknowingly. As we saw earlier, Satan exerts his dominion through deception, manipulating consciences while people believe they are making their own decisions.
But what exactly does this blindness consist of?
The Greek word noēmata primarily refers to intelligence, the faculty of understanding, and reasoning. Satan sabotages human intelligence; he corrupts the tool of reflection.
Place an object on a properly functioning scale, and it will show the correct weight. But if the scale is rigged, it will continue to function while giving false results. Human intelligence works in the same way. A person without Christ can reason brilliantly about science, philosophy, politics, morality, art, or society. They can solve extremely complex problems and yet remain incapable of understanding why Jesus had to die on a cross.
The tool is flawed. And it has been flawed by someone who doesn't want them to arrive at the truth. That is the gravity of the situation: what they don't see is precisely what they are supposed to see. The Gospel shines before them, but their eyes cannot perceive its light.
Why this blindness?
Paul is explicit:
«"so that they may not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."»
Satan knows that if they saw this glory, everything would change. The gospel doesn't simply convey information; it reveals glory. The glory of Christ is irresistible to those who perceive it. It attracts, convicts, transforms, and saves. So Satan does the only thing he can: he prevents them from seeing.
For what is at stake is not one doctrine among others, nor a religious morality, nor a spiritual system. It is a Person. Christ is the perfect image of God, the visible manifestation of the invisible God. To not see the Gospel is to not see Christ. To not see Christ is to not see God.
The true condition of the lost
This passage reveals the true condition of the lost, a reality we tend to minimize. Those without Christ are not simply people who "made bad choices" or who "aren't interested in religion." Their situation is far more serious:
- They live under domination.
- Their intelligence is compromised.
- They are actively kept away from the glory that alone can save them.
- And, even more tragically, they are unaware that they are blinded.
We can then understand why some hear the words without grasping their meaning, why others argue at length while missing the central message, and why some react with contempt or condescension. But all is not lost. For what Satan cannot prevent is the sovereign intervention of God.
The light will shine
Paul continues
«For God, who commanded that light should shine out of darkness, has also shone in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.»
Paul is echoing Genesis here. Just as God brought light into existence in the midst of darkness, He shone His light into our blinded hearts. We were in the same state. And God intervened.
What lessons can we learn?
We don't rely on brilliant arguments, but on prayer. We explain the Gospel clearly, without being destabilized by rejection or indifference, and we count on God to touch hearts.
Our role is to proclaim, His is to illuminate.
During this fast, let us pray for those whose thoughts are blinded, without condescension, without frustration, but with faith. The God of Genesis who commanded light to shine in the darkness can still do so today.

- How does this understanding of spiritual blindness change my attitude towards those who reject the Gospel?
- Do I rely on my arguments to convince, or do I truly depend on God to open their eyes?
PRAYER
Father, I understand now why some cannot see. Their minds have been blinded by the god of this world. They are under a dominion they are unaware of, their intellects sabotaged, kept from the glory of Your Son. And they don't even know what they lack. I cannot open their eyes. But You can. During this fast, I beg You to [name some people]. Declare light in their darkness. May they finally see the radiance of the gospel of the glory of Christ. In Jesus' name, amen.
