MEDITATION

In this well-known passage, Jesus reveals the immensity of God's love.

«"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

But Jesus doesn't stop at the blessing reserved for those who believe. He also reveals the spiritual state of those who refuse to believe. Their condition is clear: they are already judged. The reason is simple and precise. They have not believed in the name of God's only Son. They have not placed their faith in Him for salvation, have not accepted His mission as Savior, and have therefore remained in their sin. They have refused the forgiveness that God offers in Jesus Christ.

The diagnosis was refused

Let's take a situation that takes place every day, somewhere in the world.

David, at his wife's insistence, agrees to be examined by his childhood friend Marc, a renowned cardiologist. The results are alarming. Marc detects advanced cardiomyopathy: David's heart is functioning at only 30% of its capacity. He informs him of the seriousness of his condition and offers immediate treatment, which has a 100% success rate. The heart can be fully restored, but action must be taken without delay.

David thought for a moment, hesitated, then stood up, determined.

«Marc, don’t take this the wrong way. You’re excellent in your field, but I have other opinions too. My personal trainer thinks I just need to do more cardio. My nutritionist believes it’s a matter of diet. My life coach talks about a psychosomatic problem related to stress. I even consulted a naturopath who recommended herbs and crystals for heart energy. By combining all of this, I’ll get through this. Your protocol is too restrictive.»

Marc tries desperately to reason with him. He explains that these people aren't cardiologists, that he's suffering from a terminal illness. But David refuses. Convinced he's fine, he leaves.

Marc watches him leave, his shoulders slumped, murmuring:

«"He is already doomed. He will die. Not because there is no cure, but because he refuses to believe the diagnosis and the treatment."»

The spiritual diagnosis is equally clear:

«"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

Some downplay it: "I have a few flaws, but nothing serious." However, mild symptoms do not negate the presence of a terminal illness. And the remedy has been administered with perfect effectiveness. All who receive it are forgiven, freed, and restored.

«"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1).

Yet, like David, many reject this remedy and prefer to explore other options. Jesus then affirms a solemn truth: they are already judged. They are currently living under God's condemnation and wrath.

«"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not believe in the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him" (John 3:36).

They are not judged primarily for their moral failings, nor because they are not good enough. They are judged because they refuse to believe in Jesus Christ. Like David, they rely on their own experts: a guru, an ideology, a religion that does not save, or simply the prevailing opinion of those around them. The "Jesus protocol" seems too exclusive, too demanding.

This rejection constitutes the ultimate sin, for what is rejected is not an abstract doctrine, but the only Son of God. To believe in His name is to believe in His person, to recognize His identity as Savior and eternal Son. To reject Jesus is to reject the most precious gift God has given to humanity.

God can love and judge the same person. In His justice, sin must be punished. In His love, He sent His Son to bear this punishment in place of humanity. Those who refuse this offer remain under the condemnation that afflicts all fallen humanity. They are already judged. The final judgment will only definitively confirm this state.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE LOST

Spiritual blindness is real. It manifests itself in the flippancy with which many speak of their souls. Some are indifferent, others avoid the subject, and a few, fortunately, sincerely question themselves.

Modern man categorically rejects the biblical diagnosis of a deadly spiritual illness and an already present judgment. Many imagine that they are "not so bad" and that God cannot judge them. They sometimes blame God for their difficulties without realizing that they live separated from Him.

«We were by nature children of wrath» (Ephesians 2:3).

Such is still the condition of those who do not believe today. This truth demands urgency. Time is not guaranteed for them. To die in this state means facing judgment without recourse.

«"It is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment" (Hebrews 9:27).

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR US

Through these meditations, one reality becomes clear: while many non-believers live in ignorance of their condition, many Christians also live in a form of denial. Absorbed in their own lives, they forget the true spiritual condition of those around them.

It is necessary to urgently proclaim God's diagnosis concerning the lost, to act, to serve and to speak so that they may hear the Gospel and receive salvation.

«Now is the favorable time, now is the day of salvation» (2 Corinthians 6:2).

Each day is a favorable time, granted by God's grace, to see a soul pass from darkness to light. This week, someone close to you is living in this state without realizing it. Perhaps they think your silence means everything is alright. Tell them the truth. With love. With urgency.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

  1. Write down the names of three people. For each person, write down a sentence you could use this week to communicate the urgency without being alarmist. Set a specific date for each conversation.
  2. How would you explain to someone who claims that "God is love" that there is nevertheless a present judgment? Write a 30-45 second response based on John 3:16-18.
  3. Are you driven by the urgency to share Christ, or do you live as if others have all the time in the world?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I confess that I have sometimes lived as if people had all the time in the world. Grant me a profound understanding of this truth: without Christ, they are already judged.

This week, I commit to speaking to [name a person]. Grant me the right words to proclaim the reality of sin and the grace of forgiveness You offer now. May I communicate this urgent need with love, wisdom, and compassion.

May I see, by Your grace, men and women passing from death to life every week.

CONFESSION OF THE DAY

Without Christ, man is already judged. I will proclaim the Gospel with love, clarity, and urgency.
