How to be free from disappointment!

One day, sitting at my desk, I felt the Lord put this on my heart: "I will heal you of disappointment." I waited a few moments before reacting. I understood that when something comes from God, it is always deeper than we imagine. And, in those few moments, I understood why and I let Him do it.

Disappointment comes to all of us

Disappointment comes to all of us at some point in our lives, and when we have reached a certain spiritual maturity, we can put things into perspective and move on. However, we must ensure that there are no lingering after-effects in our lives that will taint our future, and that no weariness is undermining God's plans for us.

We all have expectations, justified or not, and people and situations don't necessarily live up to our expectations. Sometimes it's ingratitude, brutal betrayal, sometimes neglect. Someone you helped at great personal sacrifice turns their back on you and becomes your enemy. You may save someone from death only to have that person side with those who want you dead. Children can be disappointed when parents divorce. Something will come up that doesn't live up to your expectations, and sometimes the pain is acute. At some point, someone will disappoint you, a disappointing situation will arise. And it hurts, very badly.

You can save someone from death and then watch the person side with those who want you dead. Share on X

The risk is sinking into sadness, bitterness, discouragement, or, worse, despair. We can become embittered, no longer believing in anything or anyone. Relationships with others are affected. Some no longer dare to take action, no longer want to give of themselves for others, and treat people with suspicion. "Keep your heart with all diligence," the book of Proverbs exhorts us (Prov 4:23). Even when you don't seem to be affected, it's important not to take disappointment lightly, especially if it happened while you were following God's instruction. This way, you avoid anything lodged within you that could give rise to bad attitudes and lead you into disobedience. This can lead to missing out on the good things God has for us.

What to do?

  • Repent if you have contributed to it by any action or word.
  • Forgive those involved.
  • Pray for freedom from pain, distress, and frustration, for God hears the cry of His children. He is near to the brokenhearted. He restores the downtrodden and delivers them from their distresses.
  • Pray that the heart may be kept from despair, bitterness and distrust, to be filled with joy, peace and hope.
  • Pray for restoration and for new and better opportunities, new and better relationships. Choose to let go and move on.
  • Pray that God will make you firm and unshakeable.
  • Believe that God has a better future for you, that there is a reward for your obedience, that you are not following and serving God in vain.

From time to time, thoughts come to remind you of the past and make you feel like there's not much left to look forward to in the future. How can you keep moving forward?

  1. We must refuse to believe it, because God always has for his own “a future and a hope.”
  2. Continue to meditate on God's Word to soak up His goodness and kindness.
  3. Listen to the Holy Spirit to be able to make the right decisions, make the right choices of situations and people.
  4. Show mercy, moderate your expectations knowing that human beings are fallible and imperfect and many are weak.
  5. To throw oneself into all the instruction of God, firm and unshakeable.
  6. Adopt a sustained prayer life in order to easily overcome future disappointing situations.

We have the assurance that we can ask for anything according to His will and be certain to receive. Wonderful Jesus!
