When the plague broke out in Luther's hometown of Wittenberg, he made choices, had experiences, and left behind thoughts that prove instructive for us centuries later as the world grapples with the coronavirus. Indeed, we, too, are living in unusual times. Nations are being brought to their knees by a biological assault, spectacular in its scale and spread.
Radical measures are being taken to isolate entire nations in order to limit and eradicate the contagion. How should Christians react? Let us know that when peoples falter and nations tremble, God sits and reigns amidst the Cherubim, without drama or terror, but ready to help. This is what Psalm 99 teaches us.
