GOD

This Sunday, in the Roots course, we talked exclusively about God. AW Tozer explains in 'The Knowledge of the Holy' that what comes to mind when we think of God is the most important thing in our lives. In other words, what we think of God is the determining factor in our existence. For an hour, we discussed the Person of God, His attributes, His nature, His transcendence, and His immanence. Each century has its own particularities; in certain eras, the Church's difficulty was recognizing the immanence of God, in other words, that God has drawn near to us, that He is love, and that we, imperfect as we are, can become intimate with God and friends of God.

It seems to me that the great difficulty of our century is to recognize the transcendence of God, His self-existence, His sufficiency, the reality of God outside of us, His superiority over His creation, His eternal greatness, and all that makes Him that superhuman Being before Whom Isaiah cries out in terror at the vision of God on His throne. The consciousness of His majesty must once again invade us.

How can we fully praise someone whose greatness eludes us? How can we have faith in someone we know little about? The mantra of evangelical Christians is the personal relationship with God. But is this God as He really is, or as we want Him to be, or as we imagine Him? A personal relationship is a constant learning from the other; in this case, we become perpetual students of God, constantly discovering His Person, His nature, His way of being and doing.
