Today we began the Gospel of John in our three-month New Testament reading program. We've already finished three of the Gospels since February 15th, you wouldn't believe. But it can go even faster when you apply yourself; the Gospel of John, for example, can be read straight through in 135 minutes, or a little over two hours. But don't just read, listen, and even watch it.
Yes, watch it, along with Philip Savile's excellent film 'The Gospel of John'. The film is a most faithful staging of the Gospel, each scene, each word is taken as is, without addition or modification. Ian Henry Cusack is a thoughtful and revolutionary Jesus, and also very young. We tend to forget that the Lord was 30 years old at the beginning of his ministry. Don't deprive yourself of this excellent film, it will make you love again this Gospel which for many is the most mystical or even difficult to penetrate, but which is a true treasure.
