Prayer 5 to 6: WP Nicholson

It's week 5 to 6 again at Abba House. One week a month, we pray from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. This month, we're praying exclusively for the church. On Sunday, I talked about the church, the church in general and our own church in particular: who we are and where we want to go.

We exist for a very specific purpose. Far from being just another Christian club, we make no effort to attract the attention of those who like to be entertained. We are simply a little crazy, convinced that our post-modern generation has a great thirst for God and that we can be useful in its quest; convinced that atypical individuals like us, simply driven by a great passion for Jesus, can make a difference. We are a community of love whose reason for being is to bring people to God; to reconcile people with God and reveal God to people, and this, of course, in Jesus Christ.

Fervent prayer was a hallmark of the early church, and men of prayer abound in church history. WP Nicholas was said to be a man of prayer; prayer was a habit with him, as he loved to pray. He would wake up at six in the morning and not go out until noon; he spent those hours in prayer. This resulted in a great intimacy with God, and he wrote in one of his books, 'There is no one in the world I know better than I know the Lord. I don't know my mother and my wife as well as I know the Lord. I don't know my best friends as well as I know the Lord.'
