An often overlooked reason for fasting

la puissance du jeûne et de la prière

Fasting is a significant factor in spiritual power.

Characteristics of fasting

  • Fasting is abstaining from food or other pleasures for spiritual purposes. It is coupled with prayer.
  • Fasting is a spiritual repositioning to cooperate with and facilitate divine action.
  • Fasting is about submitting our bodies to the domination of our minds. It mobilizes all our resources for spiritual endeavors.
  • Forces and circumstances drain and hinder spiritual potential and therefore require the dedication of fasting and prayer to regain and maintain spiritual vitality.
  • It is an expression of our total dependence on God and our commitment to achieving results.
  • It is an affirmation of our total agreement with God and our willingness to cooperate with all His purposes.

What attitude should we adopt when fasting?

  1. Humility – Jesus taught us that fasting should be done in simplicity and humility, without showing off or strutting around. The one who fasts has no merit; everything is by grace.
  2. Faith – Jesus also teaches us that there is a reward for fasting. Fasting is therefore not a punishment, but a preparation for the reward.

What do we accomplish by fasting?

Fasting is seeking the Lord. We want to purify our lives and our church; to ascend spiritually.

1. It is a powerful expression of repentance and humility.

  • When you have done wrong before the Lord, come before him in humility and humility in the Scriptures is expressed by fasting and prayer before the Lord.
  • When you have strayed from the Lord and want to return, don't be casual, break your heart before Him, abstain from eating, spend time in prayer, confess, and ask for His mercy and strength to continue.
  • It is an act of submission not to obtain forgiveness, but to express the depth of your regret.
  • It also allows you to be worked by God to sensitize your heart to holiness, to hate what you have done. Often, we are not broken. We are only sorry because we have suffered the consequences of our actions. We do not care that we have offended the Lord.

Ask Him to take care of your heart. Otherwise, you'll make the same mistake again.
