This unknown God

Tomorrow we are filming part of the new version of the Racines Course, our biblical foundation course for new converts (the new birth, the word of God, God); and today I am in the middle of meditating on 'God'. A little thought that crossed my mind, I have no memory of having attended a teaching devoted exclusively to God, His nature and His attributes. Yes, it was about all the good He wants to do me, but about Himself… It was also about the Holy Spirit, in general about all the good He wants to do me; it was also about Jesus, and all the good He wants to do me… On the other hand, a teaching on God, on the nature of the Trinity to the exclusion of His relationship with man, no. In other words, a theological study without an anthropological perspective.

Perhaps the subject is abstract and best communicated experientially, or perhaps the fault lies with contemporary theological perspective; we seek and care about God more for ourselves and less for Him. So as long as we know enough to be 'blessed'... When the apostle Paul found himself in Athens he declared to the people of the city, in Acts 17:23, "As I passed by and looked at your things, I found an altar with an inscription on it, 'To the unknown god!' Therefore, whom you worship without knowing him, this is the one I proclaim to you."

This is what we will try to do at the Cours Racines. Although our listeners have already met Him, it would be a matter of deepening their knowledge of Him.

• Who is God?
• What are His attributes?
• What is His nature?
• What relationship should we have with Him?

These are all points that will be discussed in the third course. It is essential that their faith be based on a real knowledge of God as He is and not on dreams of a better life, or visions of a God fashioned in the image of their particular sufferings and preferences. I want those who are his beloved to have a high image of God, an image that corresponds to the immensity of His greatness. Jesus, addressing the Father, said this: 'The kingdom of God is that they know You, the only true God.' And the people of God say - AMEN.
