bulimia of joy (part 2)

sp43.jpgOn the subject of joy, I consulted one of our mentors, Charles Haddon Spurgeon. There was nothing in my copy of Hendrickson's small ten-volume collection of Spurgeon's Sermons, but a tiny book, The Joy of the Lord, yielded a few gems that we'll examine in the next few entries.

Spurgeon writes this “Our joy comes from God and has God as its object. The spiritually healthy believer rejoices primarily in God Himself. He is happy because there is a God and because God, in His person and character, is as He is. All the attributes of God become constant sources of joy for the Christian who exercises himself in reflection and contemplation.“.

Wow! We have joy first because God is, because He is as He is. His beauty, His goodness, His excellence provoke joy, the only joy that satisfies.Temporal joys cannot satisfy an eternal nature.“. Indeed, fullness of joy is promised in His presence, not elsewhere. According to Spurgeon, once a soul is awakened by the Spirit of God, it can no longer be filled with worldly pleasures. They are no longer enough. He gives us appetites that carnal things cannot satisfy. Eternal delights are at His right hand.

I find a subject dear to my heart, the contemplation of God, with the sole aim of discovering Him, of grasping and savoring His nature, His heart; just to know who He is, not theologically, but to experience the reality of the doctrine. I thanked God this morning for having given me the capacity to perceive, beyond the natural, His spiritual reality, to grasp the inexpressible and the invisible, to be fully conscious and convinced of it. This consciousness and conviction inevitably produces joy because its object is most extraordinary.
