MEDITATION

It's a scene no one wants to imagine. And yet, it's a scene Jesus deemed necessary to describe. at the end of the speech on the Mount of Olives. The nations will be brought together, then separated into two groups that will receive radically different destinies.

To illustrate this reality, Jesus used an image familiar to His listeners: that of the shepherd separating the sheep from the goats. In Jewish pastoral culture, the two species grazed together during the day, but at nightfall, the shepherd separated them. The sheep were better able to withstand the cold of the night, while the goats needed shelter.

A definitive separation

To the first group, those on His right, Jesus said:

«Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world.»

To the second group on His left, He declares:

«"Get away from me, you cursed ones..."»

These words mark a definitive separation. There is no going back, no second chance, no further delay. These people have rejected God, and now they are separated from Him forever. And the absence of God is the greatest of punishments.

We struggle to grasp its full significance, for even in a rebellious world, God is still present. He sustains all things, restrains evil, and bestows his goodness. But here, Jesus speaks of a complete separation. It is the goats who are forever removed from the source of all life, all light, all hope.

Jesus then adds a disturbing detail:

«"The eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."»

A destination that wasn't for them

This eternal fire was not created for humanity, but for Satan and his demons. The humans who end up there are beings created for communion with God, but who chose to follow the ways of the enemy. This is what makes hell so absurd and tragic—no one needed to go there.

God "desires all people to be saved" (1 Timothy 2:4). He "is patient, not wanting anyone to perish" (2 Peter 3:9). But this patience does not negate human responsibility. God's hand is outstretched; we must accept it.

Who are the goats?

One might expect the goats to be the great criminals of history: murderers, tyrants, notorious perverts. But the text reveals something else. They are not condemned for spectacular crimes, but for what they did not do: «I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink…» But He is not speaking of Himself, but of His brothers. The absence of love for one's brothers exposes the absence of true faith. «My least brothers,» says Jesus—His disciples, those who carry His message.

Jesus addresses two groups. The first, the sheep, represents the believers. They faithfully served those who were suffering, other believers. In doing so, they served Christ Himself (Matthew 25:34-40). The second group, the goats, neglected to serve Christ when He was hungry, thirsty, or suffering from various needs. Jesus holds these unbelievers accountable for their sins of omission, for what they failed to do (Matthew 25:43-46).

Crucially, these actions do not cause approval or condemnation (Titus 3:5). They demonstrate it. Works reveal genuine faith. Anyone who does not love believers is not a believer themselves.

Accepting or rejecting these messengers is tantamount to accepting or rejecting Christ himself (Matthew 10:40). The goats, therefore, represent the lost, those whose condition we studied during the first week. They are spiritually dead, blind, without hope, and without God. They have not welcomed the Gospel of Christ and his messengers.

A destination that has no end

Verse 46 contains a word that definitively seals the verdict: aiōnion which means eternal.

«"And these will go to their punishment" eternal, but the righteous to life eternal. »

The same word is used for both destinations. The goats receive eternal punishment, the sheep eternal life. Just as some will be eternally with God, others will be eternally separated from Him. Punishment is neither temporary nor limited in time. Likewise, our life with Him will have no end.

These are profound matters that deserve our full attention. There is no temporary correction, no final erasure, no possibility of return. There is no reincarnation, no purgatory, no comforting nothingness. Jesus, the very one who bore our curses, calls these individuals 'cursed'. If He went to the cross, it was not for some imaginary danger. He was determined to spare humanity this fate. Without this reality, the cross would lose its meaning. His warning, therefore, is not intended to frighten, but to save.

Jesus' insistence

Some reject the idea of hell, attributing it to manipulative preachers. Yet, the New Testament reveals a disturbing truth: Jesus, recognized as the epitome of love, is the one who spoke most about hell: Gehenna, the outer darkness, the unquenchable fire, the undying worm. He who wept over Jerusalem and endured the cross warns us with such clarity precisely because He loves.

What this means for us

This reality of eternal punishment should create in us a sense of urgency and fill us with compassion. Every day, we encounter people at home and at work who do not know the Lord and are heading toward this terrible destination.

And you who know that He is the way, the truth, and the life, what will you do? Who can watch someone walk towards a precipice and remain silent? Love cannot remain silent in the face of such danger. Christians cannot remain silent. Jesus sent them to warn and proclaim salvation, because no one is destined to end up like this.

«"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

As long as a human being has the breath of life, they can avoid perishing and receive eternal life by believing in Jesus. That is why we fast and pray that their eyes may be opened. Before each person, there are two paths. And each must choose.

How does the reality of eternal punishment affect my motivation to share the Gospel?
Is there someone in my life I need to warn while there's still time?

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You spoke clearly of eternal punishment out of love. Give me that same love. May the reality of this destination not leave me indifferent, but create in me a holy urgency. There are people around me heading toward this fire that wasn't even prepared for them. Use me to warn them. Give me the words, the courage, the opportunities. May I not be guilty of keeping for myself what could have saved someone. In Jesus' name, amen.
