MEDITATION
A scene of absolute solemnity unfolds. The presence of God pervades everything. The great white throne is erected. Its description reveals the majesty of its occupant, His perfect beauty and purity. It is here that the purity of human beings will be judged.
This scene takes place at the very end of human history. According to Revelation 20, there is first the thousand-year reign of Christ on earth, then the final defeat of Satan, and finally this Last Judgment. It is the ultimate reckoning.
And before this throne, something unimaginable happens:
«"The earth and the sky fled from him, and no place was found for them."»
Heaven and earth cannot stand before Him. Everything familiar to us vanishes. What remains in the absence of heaven and earth? Where have they gone? God alone remains. He occupies all space. And every human being must give an account of their existence. This is the final judgment, the one foretold in Hebrews 9.
The sea and the land yield up the bodies they held. The dead are raised and stand before God. The books are opened, including the book of life. And the eternal destiny of humankind is determined.

No distinction of status. In death, human beings are equal. Earthly titles no longer matter. This is the resurrection for judgment, which Jesus spoke of:
«"The hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out... those who have done evil will rise to judgment" (John 5:28-29).
The books are open
These books constitute the record of every human being's activity on earth. Impure thoughts, evil words, secret deeds, hidden motives, the degree of obedience or disobedience to God—everything is recorded there. Book after book, nothing is missing. Jesus had warned us:
«"On the day of judgment, people will give account for every careless word they have spoken" (Matthew 12:36).
Our generation lives under the watchful eye of cameras that record our movements and actions, sometimes without our knowledge, preserving a record of our every move. We are therefore not surprised that God is able to fathom our deepest thoughts and reveal them on Judgment Day. Yet many, including Christians, live as if anything that other people don't see is insignificant. A man cheats on his wife and thinks that as long as she doesn't know, it's not a big deal. But Jesus said:
«"There is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed" (Luke 12:2).
Let us reflect on this notion of accountability. Every human being must give an account; we are not independent agents. Everything will be laid bare before the One "to whom we must give an account" (Hebrews 4:13). Reading these books will shed light on each person's actions. Are they in accordance with God's will? Were they accomplished in faith in Jesus Christ?

These works will be examined to reveal sin and the rejection of the grace offered in Christ. Before the absolute holiness of God, even our best works without Christ are like "filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:5).
Then a final book is opened: the book of life. And it is this that becomes the decisive criterion for judgment.
Judgment in God's plan
The Bible contains several passages concerning judgment in God's plan. Jesus speaks in Matthew 25 of the separation of the sheep and the goats and the ensuing eternal punishment. Revelation 20 describes the judgment of the great white throne after the millennium. Whether these events are considered distinct in time or different descriptions of the same final reality, the conclusion remains the same for those who die without Christ.
On the other hand, those who die in Christ will appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ, the Bema (2 Corinthians 5:10). The Bema was a raised platform where a magistrate or referee sat during athletic games to present prizes to the victorious athletes. Here, it refers to a judgment evaluating works in preparation for rewards. The actions performed after conversion will be brought to light and assessed. «Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus» (Romans 8:1).
What are the consequences?
Everyone you meet is headed toward this appointment. The close friend who relies on your prayers but refuses to give themselves to Jesus. The cousin who says, "I believe in God in my own way." The young person evangelized at the supermarket who describes themselves as "more of a scientist." They all have this appointment before the throne. And you know what awaits them. You know that if their names are not written in the book of life, they will be lost for eternity.
Paul writes:
«Therefore, since we know what the fear of the Lord is, we try to persuade others.» (2 Corinthians 5:11). How, then, can we remain silent?
During this fast, pray every day for the three or four people on your list and ask God for concrete opportunities to share the Gospel with them.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
- Do I live with the awareness that every person I meet has an appointment with judgment?
- How does the reality of the Last Judgment influence my daily priorities and my urgency to share the Gospel?
PRAYER
Father, I thank You that my name is in the book of life, not through my own merits, but through Your grace. But I think of all those I know who are not ready. Just as someone was Your agent to bring me out of darkness, I will also go to others. Break my heart for them. During this fast, give me opportunities to tell them about Jesus. May the urgency of this judgment shape my priorities. Use me so that names may be entered in the book of life before it is too late. In Jesus' name, amen.
