MEDITATION
One of the major advantages of GPS compared to the detailed city maps we used to keep carefully in the car is its ability to recalculate the route when you make a mistake. Even when you realize you've gone the wrong way, you remain calm because you know it will automatically guide you back on the right path, unlike paper maps. But what both have in common is the same fundamental premise: there is a right way to reach your destination. Not all paths lead to the same destination.
What is true in the natural world is equally true in the spiritual realm. God is our destination. We desire to know Him. Yet, a multitude of truths, rituals, and beliefs are presented to us. Some claim to be exclusive, others pretend to make room for everything, according to your preferences. A veritable spiritual supermarket, a buffet where you help yourself at will. The dominant idea is the validation of everything and nothing, as if human satisfaction were the ultimate goal, and as if truth could be infinitely configured. According to this logic, no matter the path taken, all would lead to the same destination. But Jesus declares something radically different.
In the upper room, the night before His crucifixion, Jesus speaks of His departure and affirms that His disciples know where He is going and that they know the way. Thomas, surprised, reacts sharply, denying knowing either the destination or the way. Jesus replies with a phrase that has become essential in Christian theology:
«I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.»
With this statement, Jesus unambiguously affirms His exclusive right to access God.
The Way
He claims to be the way, not just one way among many. In other words, in this multitude of rites and beliefs that claim to offer a path to God, none is valid. No religion, no prophet, no transcendental meditation, no philosophy can lead to the knowledge of God. Jesus alone makes it possible to know God. He is the way to the Father.
Our destination is a relationship with God, and Jesus clearly states that without Him, this relationship is impossible. The path is not simply a doctrine or a set of principles: it is a person.
The implications of this declaration are immense. It nullifies everything that existed or could exist apart from Him. It invalidates the deities of various peoples, foreign prophets, including those who came after, such as Muhammad, as well as 21st-century gurus. The list is long. Even a Christian religion lacking a true understanding of Jesus is thus invalidated.
The Truth
Why is Jesus alone the way? Because He alone is the truth. The rest is false and lies. Truth is neither multiple nor malleable according to human preferences: it is unique, and Jesus alone embodies it. His person, His mission, His words, His very nature constitute the truth.
Anything that does not acknowledge Him as such, or that proposes an alternative, is false. And what is false cannot lead to God. John 1:17 affirms that grace and truth came through Jesus Christ, and John 1:14 presents Him as being full of grace and truth. This means that Christ is the ultimate and definitive revelation of God.
The life
Finally, Jesus is life. He can be the way because He is the truth, and because He alone possesses and imparts life. This life, the Greek word zoe, is not biological, but spiritual. It is divine, eternal life. A person without Christ is spiritually dead. Whoever comes to Christ receives eternal life.
Jesus declares:
«"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10)
The exclusivity clause
What makes this statement even more striking is the following clause:
«"No one comes to the Father except through me."»
Jesus insists and confirms His exclusivity. Neither religions nor the best human actions can save. He clearly states that not all paths lead to God, that no other religion can save, and that human kindness or good works cannot lead us to the Father. He alone can bring us there.
Why such exclusivity? Because humanity's fundamental problem is sin. And "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). To avoid this death and eternal separation from God, Jesus bore humanity's sins and their just punishment by sacrificing himself on the cross. Without the shedding of blood, sin cannot be forgiven. He therefore took on human form in order to shed his blood for humankind.
No religion can pay this debt. Only the blood of Christ, shed on the cross, can purify and reconcile man with God.
Many are unaware that, legally speaking, they are estranged from God and unable to draw closer to Him on their own. It is Jesus who, through His cross, provided the legal foundation enabling God to forgive and restore His relationship with humanity. It is through faith in Him that one receives salvation. Jesus warns:
«If you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins» (John 8:24).
For many, these words are unacceptable. They prefer to believe that all paths are equal and that all religions are good, as long as they provide a certain degree of well-being. They forget that the goal of faith is not temporal happiness, but an eternal destination.
Jesus Himself warned: «Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.» (Matthew 7:13-14)
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE LOST
Their eternal destiny is at stake. Persisting in seeking alternative paths, however sincere or respectable they may seem, leads to an eternity separated from God. Salvation is offered to them, fully and freely, in Jesus Christ. But without Jesus, no one can be saved. Apart from Him, humankind shares the fate of those who have rebelled against God from the beginning.
Your friend may recite his prayers several times a day, but he remains lost without Christ. That family member who says, "I believe in God in my own way," is unknowingly walking toward perdition. The one who smiles serenely, claiming we all serve the same God, each in our own way, while denying that Jesus is the Savior, is on the wrong path. Sincerity is no substitute for truth. No one can live without Jesus.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR US
We must understand that religious pluralism can facilitate social coexistence, but it is incapable of leading human beings into a genuine relationship with God. If our true desire is to lead others to God, then insisting on the necessity of going through Jesus is not optional; it is essential. Some will take offense at this, often out of ignorance or attachment to their own convictions. But agreeing with them, for fear of causing a disturbance, amounts to allowing them to move toward eternal separation.
Let us be fully aware that we are not announcing one religious option among others, but the only path to salvation. Let us state this clearly and unambiguously. Our duty is not agreement, but love. And biblical love does not consist in validating error, but in revealing the saving truth. Jesus, out of compassion, insisted that He alone can save. We are called to do the same, with the same truth and the same grace.
If Christ is truly the only way, and if every human being's time is limited, then we do not have the luxury of silence. We must speak. We must proclaim. We must implore men and women to be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.
Remember the GPS: it points in the right direction. Are we going to watch people go down the wrong path when we know the way? Are we going to keep this information to ourselves, or guide those who are lost to their destination?
Who, if not you? When, if not now? Announce the only name that saves.

- Do I truly believe that Jesus is the only way to God, or am I influenced by the prevailing pluralism?
- What degree of importance do you give in your evangelization to this notion of Jesus as the only way?
- Write down the name of someone who is seeking God through a different path (Muslim friend, New Age relative, agnostic colleague). How will you talk to them about Christ this week?
- What objection to the exclusive nature of Christ are you most afraid to face? How will you respond to it with truth and love?
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, You clearly declared: «I am the way, the truth, and the life.» Forgive me for the times I have avoided stating this clearly. I now commit to doing so without hesitation.
During this fast, may this conviction of Your exclusivity burn within me and may I be filled with compassion for those who do not see and do not understand it.
