MEDITATION
People are in a place. They come and go freely, seemingly. They work, eat, and entertain themselves. For them, this place is the best there is. They are convinced of it. "Honestly, we're happy here. This is real life," they tell themselves. When someone mentions the possibility of somewhere else, the reactions are immediate: mockery, derision, contempt. What somewhere else? There is nothing else. Nothing better. Nothing more.
What these people don't realize is that they live surrounded by invisible walls. There are no iron bars, no uniformed guards, no alarm sirens. Everything seems normal. They are surrounded by companions who are going in the same direction, thinking the same way, wanting the same things. And in this familiar environment, they feel free.
The conditioning is so profound that no one tries to escape. Sometimes, though, one of them catches a glimpse of the bars. He senses that he is in fact being held captive, and even more, manipulated. He tries to break free. But the pressure of the group, the pervasive hostility, the fear of rejection pull him back. Why flee what one believes to be freedom? They are dominated, controlled, limited… all while living in the perfect illusion of being free.
This is exactly what Paul describes in Ephesians 2:2. He unveils a largely ignored reality: that human beings without Christ live under domination. A multifaceted and profound domination.
Paul speaks first of a life lived «according to the ways of this world.» The Greek word aiōn does not simply designate an era, but a system. A spiritual atmosphere, an invisible current, opposed to God, that shapes thoughts, values, and priorities. This is how the Ephesians lived before they knew Christ, and this is how all those who do not yet know him live. They accept, often without realizing it, the redefinition of what is considered normal: success at all costs, pleasure as the ultimate goal, independence from God perceived as a sign of maturity. A life of conformity, which is in reality a life of confinement.
But Paul goes further. He specifies that this way of life is also "in accordance with the prince of the power of the air." This system is not purely human. Behind it stands an invisible power, a real, personal, intelligent, and malevolent being. Jesus calls him "the prince of this world" (John 12:31). He does not present himself in a caricatured or brutal way. His weapon of choice is not brute force, but deception. He manipulates thoughts and desires, normalizes evil, and promises freedom only to better enslave. And multitudes follow him without knowing who is leading them or where they are headed.
Paul adds finally that this spirit "is now at work in the sons of disobedience." The Greek verb energeō (from which our word "energy" comes) describes a continuous, effective, and current action. It is not a past or occasional influence, but a persistent activity, carried out behind the scenes, invisibly, but effectively. The "sons of rebellion" are not simply people who disobey sometimes. Rebellion is their nature, their identity, their spiritual heritage. And Paul makes it clear that we were all part of it.
Humans are therefore blinded, spiritually manipulated, and in rebellion against God. This realization is essential to becoming a true soul winner. Why?
He first explains the resistance we are encountering. You have surely seen people you speak to reject the Gospel with a hostility that seems disproportionate to you. Others display an almost impenetrable indifference. Some even go so far as to show contempt, convinced that believing "these things" is naive, if not stupid. Faced with this, some Christians are embarrassed, surprised, hurt, and feel humiliated. But they are wrong.
A prisoner who believes himself to be free does not seek a way out. Scripture explains this clearly:
«"The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers" (2 Corinthians 4:4).
This truth also changes our attitude. The lost are not our adversaries. They are prisoners of war. Our fight is not against them, but for them, against the powers that hold them captive. Paul will say it later:
«"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world" (Ephesians 6:12).
It ultimately leads us to pray more. Good arguments alone are not enough to free a person from spiritual bondage. It takes the power of God, divine intervention. Colossians 1:13 describes what God does:
«"He has rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of his beloved Son."»
Torn from their grasp. This is a rescue, not a negotiation. That is why fasting and prayer are so essential in evangelism. We are not simply participating in an exchange of ideas. We are engaged in a spiritual war for the liberation of the captives.
Jesus himself defined His mission in these terms:
«"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives" (Luke 4:18).
And that is what He did for each of us.
And you? You have been rescued from darkness. You now know freedom. Jesus is sending you to free those who are still captive. Will you obey, or will you spend the rest of your life thanking him for your freedom?

- How does this perspective of spiritual dominion change my view of those who reject the Gospel with hostility and indifference?
- Who should I specifically pray for during this fast, knowing that they are under spiritual influence without their knowledge?
PRAYER
Father, I realize that my struggle is not against those who reject the Gospel, but against the powers that blind them and hold them captive. During this fast, open my eyes to this spiritual reality. Give me compassion for prisoners who don't know they are prisoners. And use me as an instrument of liberation. May your Word, through my mouth, break invisible chains. In Jesus' name, amen.
