MEDITATION

Have you ever read the obituary section of a newspaper? Depending on the country, it might include photos, names, dates, and a glowing description of a life lived. Depending on the family's wealth, it could be a full page, half a page, or just a few lines without a photo. You'll never find the name of someone you just passed at the supermarket or your colleague sitting across from you.

Why? Because the obituary section is reserved for the dead. And these people are alive. They walk, they talk, they breathe. And yet.

When Paul describes our condition before Christ, he uses a Greek word: nekros. That's exactly the word you'd use to describe someone in an obituary. A corpse. A lifeless body.

Paul carefully observes all these people walking, working diligently, and planning for the future, and he notes their names in the spiritual obituary section. It's shocking. But this is the reality God sees. Millions of people, physically alive but spiritually dead. Beating hearts, extinguished spirits. Bodies in motion, souls disconnected from the Source of life.

Paul states this as an established, unequivocal condition. This death was not an accident. It was the direct result of our "faults and sins." The word paraptōma (mistakes) suggests a misstep, a deviation from the path. The word hamartia (Sins) means missing the mark. Together, they describe a humanity that has strayed from God's plan and, consequently, has become cut off from the very source of life. It is utterly lost and can do nothing for itself.

It's not about doing better, feeling better, or getting an 'upgrade'. And a corpse can't do anything for itself. It can't improve. It can't make an effort. It needs intervention that comes entirely from the outside. This intervention is useless if it's limited to giving good advice about life, time management, or encouragement.

Why is it so important to understand this?

Because our approach to evangelization depends entirely on it. If the lost are simply "sick," then we can offer them advice, improvements, a retreat. But if they are dead, They must come into being, and only God can help them.

We see the urgent need to proclaim the Word of life. It is God who gives life to the dead. And where His Word is proclaimed, His power is at work.

But this also imposes upon us a holy urgency. The people around us are not simply "different" or "not yet interested in spirituality." They are in a state of spiritual death. They need to hear the voice of the One who cried out, "Lazarus, come out!" and who still cries out today through his Gospel.

The good news is that Paul doesn't stop at verse 1. He continues: «But God, who is rich in mercy, has made us alive together with Christ» (vv. 4-5). God's «but» changes everything. Where there was death, he brings life. What he has done for us, he wants to do for those we encounter every day.

What if we saw people as God sees them? Not as living beings in need of improvement, but as dead beings in need of resurrection?

May this truth keep us from superficiality. And may it draw us towards those who, unknowingly, are waiting for someone to reveal life to them.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

How does this understanding of "spiritual death" change my view of those who reject the Gospel?
Am I tempted to present the Gospel as a mere 'improvement of life' rather than a coming into life?.

PRAYER

Lord, open my eyes to see the true condition of people without You.
They are not simply "far from the church," they are dead. This reality draws me to You because I know that only Your power can raise them from the dead. During this fast, give me a sense of urgency.
May I never treat evangelism as optional when faced with people who need life. In Jesus' name, amen.
